The Sheer Miracle of It All

Back when I was weepy while waiting for the referral, my friend and now travel companion told me the emotions were probably from the “sheer miracle of it all.” While visiting a tourist spot here in Kunming yesterday, I met a couple from Colorado who had also just adopted in the past few days. The father looked at me and just said, “Isn’t it something? We come here and now we are parents?” And the look in his eye just got me and I couldn’t even answer him. I am completely overwhelmed at the wonder of this experience.

I haven’t written much because Tian came to us following a high fever and cold. She has marks in her feet from at least four IV’s. They gave us antibiotic capsules ?? for an infant. Thankfully, our dear doctor had given us a powder form of an antibiotic for us to mix and give her if needed. We are very happy to say she is feeling better and slept through the night last night. I also had my first night sleeping on China time but Steve has really struggled with a painful shoulder and bruised leg. We are considering a massage for his shoulder.

Now about Tian,..

She is wearing 12 month clothes right at the moment but the length is a squeeze. Xiu Lan, our Chinese facilitator, thinks she ways about 17 pounds. Because it is so warm and beautiful here, we haven’t had to do the 4 and 5 layers I had anticipated. We are doing two or three layers when we go out, but Tian’s favorite moment is when she gets to meet her toes again. They are her favorite toy at the moment.

She seems to learn quickly. Yesterday, Steve blew up one of the beach balls we brought and Tian thought it was a pillow. She would have it between her legs and then lay her head on it with a big smile until it rolled away. She would fall down and then would not have the upper body strength to pull herself back up. But the end of the afternoon, Tian was catching the rolled ball and attempting to roll it back to me. She has also begun laughing.

And the tongue! We saw the tongue action from the referral picture. When Tian really gets going in play, laughing and busy, her tongue flies back and forth. Her temperament is very sweet and she loves to cuddle.

And she is absolutely gorgeous! Steve can’t look at her without a comment – already she has him wrapped securely around his little finger.

And I am completely overwhelmed by the sheer miracle of it all!
